Redefining Body Image: Looking Beyond the Spacesuit

From the time we are small, we are taught how to see ourselves. Parents, teachers, television, magazines and, above all, advertising quietly tell us what a beautiful body looks like and whether ours measures up. Long before we have words for it, many of us have learned to stand in front of the mirror as a critic rather than a friend.

We have handed the definition of beauty to people who profit from our doubt.

Yet the standards we chase are never fixed. The face, shape and fashion that one generation calls beautiful, the next forgets. What is prized in one culture is overlooked in another. If beauty can change that easily, perhaps it was never located in the body at all.

Real beauty is who we are on the inside. It is time we took the question back and answered it for ourselves.

Meet Your Own Eyes

Most of us approach the mirror with an inventory in hand: the lines, the softness, the parts we would change. We look, and we feel shame, guilt or fear.

Try something different. The next time you stand before the mirror, whether you are washing your face or brushing your teeth, set the inventory down and look into your own eyes. Not at your skin or your shape. Into your eyes.

Look with love, the way you would look at someone dear to you. Behind those eyes is the one who has carried you through every joy and every loss. That is your essence. In that small daily moment, you get to decide who you are, and no one else gets a vote.

The Body as a Spacesuit

I have come to think of the body as a spacesuit. It is the vehicle our spirit wears so we can move through this world: to walk, to touch, to breathe, to sing, to hold the people we love.

When we see the body this way, the question changes. Instead of asking how does it look? we begin to ask what does it let me do? And the answer is extraordinary. These feet carry us across the earth. These hands create and comfort. These lungs breathe all day without our asking.

Gratitude is a far kinder lens than judgment.

The spacesuit is not who we are. The energy and light within a person is far more powerful than the shell that holds it. You know this already. Think of the people you love most. When you connect with someone heart to heart, you stop seeing their so-called flaws. Society's standards simply fall away. What remains is presence, and presence is beautiful.

Coming Home to Ourselves

A lifetime of conditioning does not dissolve overnight. But small, steady practices can loosen its hold. Each time we meet ourselves with compassion instead of criticism, we become a little more at home in our own bodies, and a little more at peace.

Barefoot Practice: A Morning Ritual for Self-Love

Begin with a thought of love. Before your feet touch the floor, before the phone or the news, anchor yourself in a simple affirmation: I am love. I am loved. Let it settle into the body before the day begins.

Dress in the color of your spirit. Choose what you wear by how you feel and what you want to express, not by what the trends dictate. Color is a language. Let it speak for your inner self.

Release the need for approval. Remind yourself that other people's opinions of your body are not the truth of who you are. Their view is theirs to keep. Yours is yours to choose.

Meet your eyes. At the mirror, pause for one breath. Look into your eyes with love, and say thank you to the spacesuit that carries you.
